This essay traces the changing ideals of the Chinese body—from tall and slender in early dynasties, to plump in the Tang, to delicate and petite in the Ming and Qing—showing how the upper class shaped beauty standards to enforce social norms and hierarchy. By examining historical texts, art, and practices like foot binding, the study highlights the socially constructed nature of beauty and encourages a more critical, inclusive perspective today.
